Coronavirus Reaches Egypt

Egyptian Authorities find no symptoms of Coronavirus

16 February 2020: Egyptian Health Minister Hala Zayed on Saturday said there were no symptoms found in the only case of coronavirus in Egypt. She added further that all people that came in contact with that person will be inspected and looked at regularly for a period of 15 days.

While the new virus, which emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, had stayed away from Africa, Egyptian Health Ministry and the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday confirmed the country’s first case, a Chinese national who local authorities later said was moved to Matrouh governorate, in the northwestern part of the country, to be placed under quarantine.

The ministry started applying precautionary measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus since January 7th, Zayed said, adding that the ministry communicates with the WHO and managed in 24 hours to prepare a hospital in Matrouh that is able to receive 800 persons for quarantine.

China is transparently, responsibly and openly cooperating with the international community, including Egypt, concerning coronavirus, spokesman of the Chinese embassy in Egypt said Saturday.

Corona Reaches Egypt:

Egypt’s Health Ministry announced, Friday first Coronavirus infection for a ‘Chinese’ national in Egypt. Spokesperson for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said that the laboratory tests which were conducted for the suspected case at Cairo International Airport, resulted in a positive virus, however no symptoms appears on the infected person.
The management of Cairo's Citystars mega mall denied on Saturday rumours circulated on social media about the appearance of a coronavirus case at the mall.

An outbreak was detected and announced in City Stars Mall and reports were made that the mall had to be quarantined and vaccinated.
"We deny [the rumour] and we confirm that the mall is operating normally," the management said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.
A day earlier, screenshots of text messages on WhatsApp, attributed to a doctor, went viral on social media platforms as the messages claimed that "a Chinese girl" who works at one of the companies at Citystars was confirmed to be infected with coronavirus.

Where it Originated:

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) are two highly transmissible and pathogenic viruses that emerged in humans at the beginning of the 21st century. Both viruses likely originated in bats, and genetically diverse coronaviruses that are related to SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV were discovered in bats worldwide. In this Review, we summarize the current knowledge on the origin and evolution of these two pathogenic coronaviruses and discuss their receptor usage; we also highlight the diversity and potential of spillover of bat-borne coronaviruses, as evidenced by the recent spillover of swine acute diarrhoea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV) to pigs.

How it Spread:

Researchers in Guangzhou, China, have suggested that pangolins — long-snouted, ant-eating mammals often used in traditional Chinese medicine — are the probable animal source of the coronavirus outbreak that has infected more than 30,000 people and is wreaking havoc worldwide.

Symptoms:

Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.
Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.
Signs and symptoms of infection with the new coronavirus may appear two to 14 days after exposure and can include:
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

The severity of the new coronavirus symptoms can range from very mild to severe, even death. Although understanding of this disease continues to grow, most people with severe illness have been of an older age or had other significant existing medical conditions. This is similar to what is seen in people who have severe infections with other respiratory illnesses, such as influenza.
